What's the idea?

Play Hooky is a Colorado Springs-based rock-n-roll band that is dedicated to making good music and having a good time. Their music is based on hard-rocking rhythms, singable melodies and meaningful lyrics. The band was birthed in September of 2002 and continues to pump out new songs.

Why Not?

The "idea" behind Play Hooky is to make good music with lyrics that mean something. So, here's how the guys define good music - guitar, bass, drums and vocals with a heavy edge. Their music is powerful, catchy (hooky, if you will) and singable. You can even dance to it if you feel so inclined. And the bonus? The lyrics. They cover everything from inner conflict and relationships to identifying the stupidity that we are constantly being spoon-fed by the media and entertainment industries. So, the music goes well with white or red wine; or beer.

All of the guys in Play Hooky have been around long enough to get over the sex and drugs part of "sex, drugs and rock-n-roll." They aren't looking to become rock stars. They are inspired solely by the joy of playing and sharing their music. Of course, a little money thrown into the mix doesn't hurt (wink, wink). However, the boys do not play for beer. Whiskey, maybe, but never just for beer.

Randy Orcutt
Hometown: Somewhere, CO
Eyes: Two
Favorite Teams: Broncos and Avalanche
Favorite Ice Cream: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Nothing like a real live drummer. Sure beats a real dead drummer. Randy signed on with Play Hooky in October of 2004 and hasn't been asked to leave yet. That might be a new Hooky record! He's been playing drums since he was five, is a self-professed KISS 'freak', and lists Gene Krupa, Scott Travis, John Bonham, and Pat Torpey as influences. Must be something in the genes since his father and brother are also drummers. Randy plays Sonor drums and enjoys understanding the tiniest intricacies of his instrument. His metronome-like, near-perfect meter and laid back personality make him a perfect fit for the band, despite the fact that he hates guys named Brad and Keith. And bassists. And guitarists. Good thing he ended up in Play Hooky, no?
Brad Olson
Hometown: Colorado Springs
Drug Test Results: Negative
Avg Hours of Sleep: Four (on a good day)

Brad joined Play Hooky in August of 2005 bringing with him a slew of great riffs and impeccable chops. Brought up listening to bands like KISS and Black Sabbath, Brad was first driven to play guitar when he was only seven years old. Inspired by shredders like Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, and John Petrucci, Brad has been refining his tone and chops for nearly 20 years. Brad uses Ibanez and Kramer guitars, Line 6 amplification and D'addario strings.
Keith Varney
Hometown: Tampa, Florida
Sign: Libra
Eyes: Blodshot
Favorite Food: Wife

Keith is the bass player, lead singer and tyrannical leader (iron-fisted) of Play Hooky. His primary bass/songwriting influences include Rush, Bob Daisley, Alice In Chains, Derek Smalls, Soundgarden, Dee Murray and Johnny Otis, just to name a few. His vocal influences include Ozzy Osbourne, Brad Delp, Daryl Hall (shut up), Jeff Lynne, and Amaya Uranga. He has been playing bass and guitar for too long, currently brandishing Fender and Ibanez basses, and SWR amplification. He's is trying to incorporate a set of Roland pedals into the band's live performances - without hurting himself in the process.
Chuck Schwien
Hometown: Unknown
Height: 6' when standing, 3' when sleeping
Favorite Food: Scotch
Chuck has been writing lyrics longer than the other guys in the band have been writing. That's not saying much though - their correspondence courses are going very well though, thank you. Chuck's lyrics are not your average, run-of-the-mill, love song, hair band, gangsta, drinking, crying.... well, you get the picture. He combines attitude with a penchant for identifying the stupidity that we are constantly being spoon-fed by the media and entertainment industries. And our parents. And our girlfriends. And our pets. Okay, so he also writes some stuff about inner conflict and relationships. Rumor is that Chuck is currently skulking around central Florida, checking out the hotties at the shuffleboard tournaments. If you should happen to run across him, please let him know the band needs some more lyrics.
